How to Wear a Saree Step-by-Step: Complete Beginner Guide

Wearing a saree for the first time can feel intimidating, but once you understand the basic draping technique, it becomes second nature. This step-by-step guide walks you through the classic Nivi style with clear instructions and common mistakes to avoid.

What You Need

The saree (5.5-6.5 yards), a matching blouse, a petticoat (underskirt), safety pins, and shoes.

Step 1: Put On the Petticoat and Blouse

Start by wearing your petticoat tied firmly at the waist and your fitted blouse.

Step 2: Tuck the Inner End Into the Petticoat

Starting from your right hip, tuck the top edge of the inner end into the petticoat waistband, walking the fabric around to the left.

Step 3: Make the Front Pleats

Gather 5-7 evenly spaced pleats, each about 4-5 inches wide, and tuck them into the petticoat slightly left of your navel.

Step 4: Drape the Pallu Over Your Shoulder

Take the remaining fabric (pallu) and bring it from your left hip around your back to your right shoulder.

Step 5: Secure the Pallu

Pin the pallu to your blouse at the shoulder with a safety pin.

Step 6: Adjust the Length

Check the length all the way around — the saree should just touch the top of your feet.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Petticoat too loose, pleats too wide or too narrow, pallu too long, wrong shoes. Shop our saree collection for beginner-friendly options.
